How can I take a large file of more than 5000 individuals, with copious demographic data, and copious notes on each individual, and print the file, prefereably in alphabetical order.

Sounds like a lot of trees involved here.

Two main options. In the Table Layout, sort the column the way you want the names to be displayed and then copy it to a spreadsheet and print from there (you could of course sort within the spreadsheet)

Alternatively use the Report Writer and select the English Narrative Skin and export as a file for Open Office or Word. Sort it there again if not what you want
