Before swedish users will be convinced this is the software to use, we need to adress the problem with name order and multiple names...

I have specified this before: We have a naming culture where people can have any number of names, and where the name used is allowed to be anywhere in that order. But the order is set.

As for me: In a swedish Genealogy tree my name would be represented:

Karin Anna Kristina

Until there is a way to create this representation, GenoPro wont get top reviews here, since it affects basically all families.

It also affects the statistics and the autofill that all names inserted in the space for additional first name is treated as ONE name, making autofill and name stats behave in an unwanted way.

I have not looked at your earlier posts but on the GenoMap you can easily set your name to show a wide variety of options, including Last. First Middle.

I am not sure about your comment about using family entry wizard etc (I rarely use them) but the Last name is derived from the Family Name, which in European custom does not vary.

The problem with a genealogical program such as GenoPro is that it has to cope with a wide variety of conventions. In many parts of the world the concept of family name is very different, children inheriting the name of the father so the Last name (which as you find is often written first) changes each generation.

Or have I misunderstood your problem? We are visiting Sweden tomorrow!

I have had a similar problem (although I am not Swedish!). My wife's family are traditional Roman Catholic where the first name is usually a Saint's name, although they are normally called by their second or third name. I have used a work-around whereby I capitalise the name by which they are known - in your case I would use: Karen ANNA Kristina. The name they are known by would also be put in the 'Nickname / Initials' field for recognition in the narrative report. Of course, if GenoPro could be improved to allow additional formatting such as underline and italics, this would allow other options.

It also affects the statistics and the autofill that all names inserted in the space for additional first name is treated as ONE name, making autofill and name stats behave in an unwanted way.

I assume you are referring to the 'Middle Names' field here, and I agree this is not ideal. However, a solution could be difficult as the total number of Forenames is unlimited.

Have you examples of other genealogy programs which get around these problems?

It's not the first time this 'Name Format' matter came up in this forum.
The way this subject is actually provided by Genopro to the Users is somewhat restrictive in some instance. It should fit most countries but certainly not, as Anna mentioned, every single country in the world.
One way perhaps to improve is:
1) to replace the existing Drop Down List (DDL) by a Name Format Builder. This could be achieved by providing a 'Tags Selection' shorter DDL (consisting of the usual tags: Title, Name.First, Name.Last, ...) along with a Result Display Field (RDF). The RDF should be made 'inputable' for addition of characters such as '(' , ')' or '-' and also for provision of Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+U, ... for bold, italic, underline, ... + another Ctrl for CAPITALIZATION. Why not.
This will provide total (or at least more) control for the Users.
Hope it's technically feasible.
2) Presently there is no free space to add up an RDF within an Ind input panel so I squeezed a bit the medical radio buttons in order to free space for 2 lines as shown on this home-brewed screenshot:

3) I also suggest that on the File->Properties->Auto/Default tab, an 'Apply All' button be provided in case a User wish to generally change the Name Formatting of an existing tree. This 'Apply All' button should then change/update all existing Inds to the new formatting.
Thank you,
JC

Another method that can be used now is to to put the preferred name as First name and still include it in the Middle Name list. Then delete the first 'first' name from Display Name and Full Name  The Narrative Report then still uses the preferred name correctly.

The edit to the Display & Full Names would be manual and perhaps tedious. However it should be straightforward for GenoPro to add this format to the drop down list e.g. Middle Last to list formats avaiable for Display Name and Full Name. i.e. for each option with First Middle also provide a Middle only option. This would make it easier to set these names.

If it is of interest I should be able to change the Narrative & Descendants Reports to detect this format, i.e. 'first' name also occurring in Middle Name field, and underline it.

An even easier, (for the users,) method, may be to flag the first name used by adding an otherwisw unused charachter just before it if it is not in first position.

Ex:

Karin ¤Anna Kristina

Ingrid ¤Britt-Marie

Karl ¤Sven ¤Bertil Isak (double but not hyphenated (wrong word?) name, hence two flags)

This is how some scandinavian programs deal with it. Takes a little bit of programming to tell GenoPro not only to underline them (or capitalize or whatever suits the user) but also to use them in the narratives, but still a pretty neat solution.
