I've had a couple instances of information theft from my reports that I have posted to my private family website.

Due to these thefts, I have had to delete all information from this site.

Now, I have many, many family members requesting information.  And asking where the 'tree' is.

With the introduction of 'Vista', anyone who has Vista on their computer has 'Screenshot'.  Even if we set permissions for 'no downloads', thieves can, within a very short time, 'clean you out' (copy all files).

Is there a way to add a clear .gif over the right side of the report, thus making copying not possible?  I understand that it would make navigating all the links on that side impossible and visitors would have to manually scroll the 'Names' list, but at the same time possibly make such a deterrent that thieves would leave in frustration rather than with full database.

If there is some other method you have come up with, please, please let me know.

I think that perhaps, instead, you should consider why you wish your information to belong to you, exclusively? Do you not appreciate when others contribute to your work in tracing the individuals you are looking for? Is it not pleasing that registries are open and available?

If there is something you don't want people to find out, I suggest you do not publish it on the internet... If you only wish for your nearest to see the tree, put it on a CD and give it to them. Then there will be almost no risk of theft.

No one should ever offer sensitive information on the net. Most serious genealogists would never claim "ownership" to data: they are very keen on mentioning their sources.

Everything published on the web is unerasable, which is a good thing to remember. Hence the filters in the report generator. Use it wisely.

The reason I put my work out on the net is that people are interested. If I did research for a living, for a fee, it would probably be different, but onbce the fee for my work was paid, the resulting data would not be exclusively "mine" or "theirs".
